Growing Kid-friendly Bouquets

As most of us know, not all plants are safe for kids or pets. And even plants that are not toxic, can still injure or harm our little loved ones and fur babies.. Just ask us - we have lovely roses. In this post, we’ll take a look at the top 10 Kid-friendly plants we discovered are the best for bouquets and crafts.

  1. Chamomile

Chamomile, that sweet smelling, daisy like flower that everyone loves to enjoy each spring. Pick these with your kids and incorporate into craft projects like necklaces, bracelets and wreaths.

2. Dandelion

Another kid-friendly flowering plant common to many gardens is the Dandelion. As always, be sure to accompany kids in the garden as often bees nestle in the sun on these lovely yellow flowers.

3. Geraniums

Geraniums are a popular garden plant for kids because they’re resilient and fragrant. The stems of the geranium can grow long and have clusters of flowers making it easy for kids to pick for bouquets.

4. Lavender

Nearly every cottage garden has lavender. Lavender not only makes great kid-friendly bouquets, it’s scent will surely calm and sooth the active little ones.

5. Mint

Fast-growing mint is a fun and rewarding plant to grow. The kids can grow it outside in the ground, in an outdoor container, or inside on a windowsill.

6. Nasturtium

These are easy flowers to grow, with blue-green leaves and gorgeous blooms, they grow in climbing or mound forms. Nasturtiums come in an array of colors from peach and red to coral and rose and show off all season until frost. But the coolest thing about both the flowers and the leaves is that they're edible, so kids can toss them on summer salads and tasty no-bake desserts.

7. Rosemary

A member of the mint family, Rosemary in a favorite in a kids garden as it has lovely violet colored flowers and needs very little attention. Gather flowering branches in the morning and gently pinch off the tender tops (easier for kids) as the lower, more woody stalks, may require the use of garden shears.

8. Strawberry

Kids love picking the flowers of the Strawberry bush as much as the bright berries fresh off the plant. New strawberry varieties are pretty, compact plants that produce fruit all season long and thrive in containers and hanging baskets. It's possible to grow these from seed, but it takes time. Look for plants, which will bear fruit the first season.

Parental caution, strawberries (like peanuts) are not safe food choices for everyone. Please watch your child carefully for signs of allergic reactions.

9. Sweet Alyssum

This lacy-looking annual plant has a sweet fragrance that’s easily carried on in the breeze. Pollinators love it. Plus, it’s a sturdy plant that looks wonderful cascading out of window boxes and hanging baskets alongside other plants. And because it can withstand a light frost, it lasts a long time in the garden. It’s also easy for kids to pick and collect.

10. Thyme

Like Rosemary, Thyme is a member of the mint family. Thyme is easy to grow and easy for kids to pick and create bouquets. Thyme is frequently prepared as tea as it contains many essential oils and antimicrobial properties.
